As a gamer in his mid-20s, Marc Merrill never imagined Riot Games and League of Legends to be as widely successful as they have been. He and his business partner were not software developers, but they had the foresight to see gaming move from a product packaged at a retailer to an online streaming service.

Merrill says the infrastructure of online streaming grew five to 10 years ago. Riot Games created a platform for players to join teams, and great players could gain celebrity and pro status. The gaming platform recently collaborated with Louis Vitton to create skins, digital cosmetic items that gamers could purchase. The World Champion Finals in Paris had 6 million viewers from all around the world and was streamed in 19 different languages.

Merrill says that growing entrepreneurs need to have intellectual honesty, look at the customer data and find what issues will hurt your business. He says that entrepreneurs should be data-informed but not data-driven because data is reactive to what already has happened and not able to predict the future. Merrill says it’s important to be stubborn when encountering mistakes and setbacks to keep moving forward.
